Light
Provide bright, indirect light.
Good light supports healthy growth and is especially important for variegated plants because cream and white portions of foliage contain less chlorophyll than fully green tissue.
Protect the plant from prolonged harsh direct sunlight, particularly on lighter-colored areas, which can scorch more readily.
Water
Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to begin drying before watering thoroughly.
Water until excess drains freely and avoid allowing the roots to remain continuously saturated.
Don’t water simply because Tuesday has arrived.
Check the soil.
Your plant’s water use changes with temperature, light, pot size, season, and active growth. Learning the plant is much more useful than memorizing a schedule.
Humidity
Jose Buono appreciates moderate humidity, but it can be grown in normal household conditions when its other needs are met.
Higher humidity can be helpful during active growth and leaf development, but good airflow remains important.
Temperature
Warm, stable household temperatures are best.
Protect the plant from cold drafts and abrupt temperature changes.
Fertilizer
Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the product directions.
Avoid excessive fertilizer in an attempt to force rapid growth or increase variegation.
Healthy roots, appropriate light, and consistent care matter far more.
Growth Habit
Jose Buono is a climbing Philodendron.
Providing a sturdy moss pole, plank, or other vertical support allows it to follow its natural climbing habit and supports the development of increasingly substantial foliage as the plant matures.
Plan for the plant you may have several years from now—not only the one sitting in today’s nursery pot.
A Note About Variegation
Variegation is naturally variable.
The amount, color, and placement of lighter tissue can differ significantly between leaves. No responsible seller can guarantee what future foliage will look like.
Lighter portions of leaves also contain less chlorophyll and can be more susceptible to cosmetic browning or damage than fully green tissue.
And remember:
Variegation is something to enjoy—not something the plant owes us.
A greener leaf is still a perfectly good leaf.
Pet Safety
Not pet friendly. Like other Philodendrons, Jose Buono contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and can cause painful oral irritation if chewed or ingested by cats or dogs.
Keep it away from pets and children likely to chew foliage.
