Why We're called Rare Root?
People often assume the name means we only sell rare plants.
We don’t! Our collection spans both Classic (the reliable, well-loved staples every plant shelf needs) and Collectors (the harder-to-find, more unusual pieces). What’s rare isn’t the plant. It’s the roots. Whatever we sell, the health of that plant starts and ends with its root system.
So every plant — Classic or Collectors, $20 or $80 — goes through the same rootfirst process before it’s ever listed: time to recover, a soil blend built for its next home rather than the greenhouse it came from, and beneficial amendments to give those roots what they need to actually thrive long-term, not just survive the trip to your door. A strong plant is built from the roots up, and that part of the process is never optional, never rushed, and never skipped, no matter which line the plant belongs to. That’s the whole name.

Why We Don't Flip Plants?
Here’s something most new plant parents don’t find out until it’s too late: the soil your plant arrives in was never meant to keep it alive. Most plants sold online or in shops are “flipped”, unboxed from a wholesale shipment one evening and sold the next day, still in the same soil they were grown in at a commercial greenhouse.
That soil isn’t a mistake. It’s actually correct for where it came from: greenhouses run precise irrigation schedules, high humidity, and bright, consistent light all day, every day. A fast-draining, lightweight mix that gets watered on a strict commercial schedule works beautifully in that environment.
It is a completely different story in a living room. In a home, that same mix dries unevenly, holds water in the wrong places, and wasn’t built to support a plant through weeks of adjusting to your light, your humidity, and your watering habits. It’s not that the seller did anything wrong; it’s that the soil was never suited for the plant’s next chapter, only its last one. So the buyer ends up choosing between two bad options
Option 1: they don’t know to repot, because nobody tells them. The plant looks fine for a few weeks, then starts declining for reasons that seem mysterious and by the time root rot or dieback shows up, it’s often too late to fix.
Option 2: they do their research, realize they need to repot right away, and now have to go buy a quality nursery pot, a proper aroid or houseplant mix, and amendments like worm castings or mycorrhizae, on top of the plant they just paid for. That “affordable” $25 plant quietly becomes a $35–40 plant, plus an afternoon of research and a repotting job most people have never done before, on a plant that’s already stressed from shipping and now gets disturbed again right when it needs to be left alone.
Either way, the buyer is the one absorbing the cost, in money, in time, or in a plant that doesn’t make it.
What we do instead At Rare Root, every plant goes through the same process before it’s ever listed for sale:
1. Recovery first. New arrivals get time to settle back into steady growth before we do anything else. A stressed plant doesn’t get repotted; it gets left alone until it’s ready.
2. Repotted into a home-ready mix. Once it’s stable, we repot into a blend built specifically for houseplant conditions, not greenhouse conditions, enriched with worm castings and mycorrhizae to support strong root development from day one.
3. Monitored, not rushed. We don’t list a plant until it’s actively growing and showing healthy roots in its new soil. If that takes a few extra weeks, it takes a few extra weeks. By the time a plant reaches your door, it’s already survived the hardest part, the transition, in soil that’s actually built for your home, not a greenhouse bench. The plant in the photo is the plant you get.
One more thing we do differently: every plant is photographed individually, and that photo is what you’re buying, not a stock image, not “similar to what you’ll receive.” We use real photos because we’ve been on the other end of a disappointing unboxing ourselves: a plant that was healthy, but smaller or far less variegated than the listing photo promised.
That gap between expectation and reality is one of the most common reasons people feel let down by an online plant purchase, and it’s entirely avoidable. So we avoid it.
Why that’s worth paying for?
We’re not pricing against the $25 flipped plant. We’re pricing against the $25 flipped plant plus the pot, soil, and amendments you’d have to buy right after, plus the plant you might lose while you’re still figuring out what went wrong.
