Care Guide

Light

Provide bright, indirect light for healthy growth and to support attractive variegation.

Variegated forms generally benefit from good light because the lighter portions of their foliage contain less chlorophyll than fully green tissue.

Some gentle direct sun may be tolerated when the plant has been properly acclimated, but protect it from abrupt exposure to prolonged, intense sunlight that could scorch the foliage.

Water

Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly.

Water until excess drains freely from the pot and avoid allowing the roots to remain continuously wet.

Dwarf Umbrella Trees generally handle some drying better than constantly saturated soil, so check the soil rather than watering automatically according to a calendar.

Humidity

Average household humidity is generally suitable.

Moderate humidity is appreciated, but this plant does not require greenhouse-like conditions to grow successfully indoors.

Temperature

Warm, stable household temperatures are best.

Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Fertilizer

Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the product directions.

There is no need to overfertilize in an attempt to force rapid growth. Consistent care, healthy roots, and appropriate light are more important.

Growth Habit

Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree develops an upright, branching, shrub-like growth habit and can eventually take on the appearance of a small indoor tree.

Its palmately compound leaves consist of multiple leaflets radiating from a central point, creating the familiar umbrella-like shape.

Pruning can be used to manage height, encourage branching, and help shape the plant as it matures.

A Note About Variegation

The amount and placement of cream-to-yellow coloration can naturally vary between leaves.

Good light helps support variegated growth, but don’t expect every new leaf to reproduce the pattern of the one before it.

And as always, a small brown edge or cosmetic blemish on a light-colored portion of a leaf doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong with the entire plant.

Look at the whole plant.

Pet Safety

Not pet friendly. Dwarf Umbrella Tree contains irritating compounds, including calcium oxalate crystals, and can cause oral irritation and other symptoms if chewed or ingested by cats or dogs.

Keep it away from pets and small children likely to chew foliage.
