Care Guide
Light
Provide bright, indirect light for healthy growth.
Good light helps Silver Sword grow vigorously and develop its characteristic foliage. Protect it from prolonged, harsh direct sunlight, particularly through hot windows, which can scorch leaves.
Water
Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to begin drying before watering thoroughly.
Water until excess drains freely from the pot, and avoid leaving the roots continuously saturated.
Rather than following a fixed schedule, check the soil. Your plant’s water use will vary depending on light, temperature, season, pot size, and how actively it is growing.
Humidity
Moderate humidity is appreciated, although Silver Sword can adapt to typical household conditions.
Higher humidity may support healthy growth, but good airflow remains important. There’s no need to turn your living room into a rainforest if both you and your plant are doing perfectly well without one.
Temperature
Warm, stable indoor temperatures are best.
Protect your Silver Sword from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Fertilizer
Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the product directions.
Avoid overfertilizing in an effort to force faster or larger growth. Good light, healthy roots, appropriate support, and consistent care are the better foundation.
Growth Habit
Silver Sword is a climbing Philodendron.
Providing a moss pole, plank, or other sturdy vertical support allows the plant to follow its natural growth habit.
The foliage changes as the plant matures. Juvenile leaves are relatively narrow, while mature foliage becomes larger and develops a more distinctly sagittate—or arrow/sword-like—shape.
This change in leaf form is normal development and part of what makes Philodendron hastatum especially interesting to grow.
Pet Safety
Not pet friendly. Like other Philodendrons, Philodendron hastatum contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and can cause oral irritation if chewed or ingested by cats or dogs.
Keep it away from pets and small children likely to chew foliage.
