Care Guide

Light

Provide very bright light for healthy growth and strong foliage coloration.

Crotons generally develop their best color with abundant light. Indoors, a very bright window can be appropriate, and some direct sun may be beneficial when the plant has been properly acclimated to it.

Avoid moving a plant abruptly from relatively protected conditions into intense direct sun, because foliage that hasn’t acclimated can be damaged.

Water

Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the potting mix begins to dry, then allow excess water to drain freely.

Avoid keeping the roots constantly saturated, but don’t allow the plant to remain severely dry for extended periods either. Crotons can respond to significant drought stress by wilting or dropping foliage.

Humidity

As a tropical foliage plant, Croton appreciates humidity, but good airflow and sensible watering remain important.

In an ordinary home, concentrate first on providing good light, stable conditions, and appropriate watering rather than trying to create an artificially perfect environment.

Temperature

Crotons are tropical and cold-sensitive. Keep your plant in warm, stable conditions and protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.

Fertilizer

Feed during periods of active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the product directions.

Avoid excessive fertilization. Good light, healthy roots, and consistent care are more important than trying to force rapid growth.

Growth Habit

‘Bush on Fire’ produces relatively narrow foliage and develops a branching, shrub-like form as it grows. The cultivar is documented for its small, narrow leaves with reddish spotting, and its foliage coloration can become increasingly striking as leaves mature.

Pruning can be used when needed to manage shape and encourage branching.

Pet Safety

Not pet friendly. Crotons should be kept away from cats and dogs that may chew plants. The sap can also be irritating, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid contact with eyes and sensitive skin.
