Care Guide

Light

Provide bright, indirect light to support healthy growth and variegation.

Variegated foliage contains areas with reduced chlorophyll, so good light is particularly important. However, the lighter portions of the leaves can also be more vulnerable to scorching from prolonged harsh direct sunlight.

Gentle morning sun may be tolerated when the plant has been properly acclimated, but avoid abruptly exposing it to intense direct sun.

Water

Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to begin drying before watering thoroughly.

Water until excess drains freely from the pot, and don’t allow the root zone to remain continuously saturated.

Rather than following a fixed watering schedule, check the soil. Light, temperature, pot size, season, and active growth all influence how quickly a plant uses water.

Humidity

Moderate humidity is appreciated, but Ring of Fire can be grown in normal household conditions when its other needs are met.

Higher humidity can be beneficial, particularly during active growth, but good airflow remains important.

Temperature

Warm, stable indoor temperatures are best.

Protect the plant from cold drafts, air-conditioning vents, and abrupt temperature changes.

Fertilizer

Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the product directions.

Avoid overfertilizing in an attempt to force faster growth or stronger variegation. Variegation isn’t something fertilizer can simply manufacture, and excessive feeding can damage healthy roots.

Growth Habit

Ring of Fire develops a relatively compact, upright growth habit with elongated foliage characterized by deeply toothed or serrated-looking margins.

It is generally a slower grower than many familiar Philodendrons, so don’t assume a period without a new leaf means something is wrong.

Sometimes it’s simply taking its time.

A Note About Variegation

Variegation naturally varies.

Individual leaves may display different amounts and patterns of green, cream, yellow, or orange coloration. Lighter sections of foliage contain less chlorophyll and may also develop cosmetic browning more readily than fully green tissue.

One imperfect patch or brown edge does not automatically indicate an unhealthy plant.

Please don’t judge the health of your Ring of Fire by whether every leaf looks like the most spectacular photograph you’ve seen online.

Look at the whole plant.

Pet Safety

Not pet friendly. Like other Philodendrons, Ring of Fire contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and can cause significant oral irritation if chewed or ingested by cats or dogs.

Keep it away from pets and children likely to chew foliage.
