Dark, dramatic foliage in shades so deep they can appear almost black gives Black Mamba Begonia an unmistakable presence. Richly textured and wonderfully moody, this compact Collector proves that sometimes the most interesting plant in the room isn’t the brightest one—it’s the one that makes you lean closer.

Care Guide

Light

Provide bright, indirect or filtered light.

Good light supports healthy growth and allows you to appreciate the rich coloration of the foliage.

Protect Black Mamba from prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.

Very low light may reduce healthy, compact growth.

Water

Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to begin drying before watering again, while avoiding prolonged extreme dryness.

Water thoroughly and allow excess to drain freely.

Begonias generally appreciate consistent moisture but are vulnerable to problems when their roots remain continuously saturated.

And this is definitely a plant where we want to check the soil rather than follow the calendar.

Humidity

Moderate humidity is appreciated.

Black Mamba can benefit from increased humidity in a dry home, but good airflow is equally important.

Avoid creating stagnant, constantly wet conditions around the foliage.

In other words:

Humidity?

Lovely.

Swamp?

No thank you.

Temperature

Warm, stable household temperatures are best.

Protect the plant from cold drafts and abrupt temperature changes.

Fertilizer

Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the product directions.

Avoid excessive feeding.

Healthy roots and steady growth are much more important than trying to push a Begonia to grow faster than it naturally wants to.

Growth Habit

Black Mamba is grown primarily for its compact, ornamental foliage rather than as a climbing or trailing plant.

Its dense growth and richly colored leaves make it particularly useful for someone who wants an unusual Collector without committing a significant amount of floor or vertical space.

And yes, we’re absolutely adding that to Find Your Plant:

“I want something unusual, but I do not have room for it to eventually eat the sofa.”

We have options.

Leaf Care

Begonia foliage can be more delicate than the thick leaves of plants such as Rubber Trees or many Philodendrons.

Handle the leaves gently and avoid unnecessary rubbing or polishing.

There’s no need to make every leaf cosmetically perfect.

Let a Begonia look like a Begonia.

Pet Safety

Not pet friendly. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates and are considered toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, with the underground portions generally containing the greatest concentration.

Keep this plant away from pets and small children likely to chew or ingest plant material.
