Care Guide

Light

Provide bright, indirect light for strong growth and vibrant coloration.

Lemon Lime can tolerate somewhat lower indoor light, although growth may slow and the foliage may become less vivid.

Protect the plant from prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.

Water

Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to begin drying before watering thoroughly.

Water until excess drains freely and avoid allowing the roots to remain continuously saturated.

Heartleaf Philodendrons are relatively forgiving, but that doesn’t mean they want wet feet.

And no matter how easy the plant:

Check the soil. Don’t check the calendar.

Humidity

Average household humidity is generally suitable.

Lemon Lime appreciates moderate humidity and may benefit from somewhat higher humidity during active growth, but it does not require greenhouse conditions to be a happy houseplant.

Temperature

Warm, stable household temperatures are best.

Protect the plant from cold drafts and abrupt temperature changes.

Fertilizer

Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the product directions.

Avoid excessive feeding in an attempt to make the plant grow faster.

Trust me.

Once a happy Heartleaf Philodendron decides it’s time to vine, it is perfectly capable of handling the “grow longer”portion of the assignment without much encouragement.

Growth Habit

Lemon Lime Heartleaf Philodendron is a climbing and trailing vine.

It can be allowed to cascade from a shelf or hanging planter, or provided with a moss pole, plank, or other vertical support and encouraged to climb.

Pruning longer vines can help maintain a fuller appearance, and cuttings can be propagated to create additional plants.

A Note About Color

New Lemon Lime foliage may emerge in especially bright yellow-green or chartreuse shades before changing somewhat as it matures.

Light levels also influence the appearance of the foliage.

Variation in shade from one leaf to another is normal.

And no, a greener leaf hasn’t betrayed the family.

Look at the overall health and growth of the plant rather than expecting every leaf to be precisely the same shade.

Pet Safety

Not pet friendly. Like other Philodendrons, Philodendron hederaceum contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and can cause painful oral irritation if chewed or ingested by cats or dogs.

Keep it away from pets and small children likely to chew foliage.
